For a personal state tax extension for the State of New York, you'll need to file Form IT-370 (PDF). As long as it's completed accurately and submitted on time, you'll be grantd a six month extension. Or, if you are approved for a federal tax extension, you can attach a copy of that (form 4868) to your state tax return and include “New York State Copy” at the top of the form.

Filing for a New York tax extension does not grant you extra time to pay any tax balance due. You balance must be paid by April 15 to avoid possible penalties.

The State of New York requires that you file New York business tax extension, regardless of whether you file a federal extension. If the form is completed accurately and on time, you will be granted an automatic 6-month tax extension from your standard filing deadline.

Filing for a New York tax extension will not provide you with additional time to pay any tax balance due, which must be paid by your original filing deadline or interest and other payment penalties may apply.
